Passenger ferry sinks in South Pacific, dozens missing
A passenger ferry carrying 47 people sank between the islands of Ambae and Santo in Vanuatu on Friday.
Vanuatu's Ministry of the Prime Minister said the tragedy likely resulted from ignored marine warnings about strong winds and the possibility that the vessel was overloaded.
Retired Coast Guard Capt. Aaron Davenport said water temperature, injuries and access to flotation or other lifesaving equipment could affect survival chances of those still missing.
“Ship owners must ensure their vessels are seaworthy, carry all required safety equipment and have proper communication systems on board. Ignoring strong marine warnings puts lives at risk.”
