Traditionalists defy Pope Leo XIV with bishop consecrations in Switzerland
The Society of St. Pius X consecrated four bishops without papal consent on July 1, 2026, in Econe, Switzerland.
The Rev. Robert Gahl, an ethics expert at the Catholic University of America, opposed the consecrations, saying one cannot serve tradition while disobeying the church.
In 1988, Lefebvre consecrated four bishops without papal consent, and the Vatican promptly excommunicated Lefebvre and the four bishops.
