Paraguay's President Peña impeached and arrested; Pedro Alliana sworn in
Prosecutor Silvia Margarita Gonzalez Vester said Peña is due to be questioned on Saturday over allegations of breach of trust, influence peddling, and misappropriation of funds.
Peña said in an address to the nation on Thursday that he was sorry and that it was never his intention to betray the trust placed in him.
Peña's defence lawyer Ricardo Preda described the allegations as a reckless, irresponsible, and opportunistic accusation.
“I do not wish for my presence to be a source of greater division or instability. It is my responsibility to place the country above my own personal fate,”
SANTIAGO PENA
