Egypt's role in shaping Ethiopia's next Nile dams after GERD
Ezekiel Gebissa, an Ethiopian professor at Kettering University, said smaller dams could generate electricity for local communities without significantly reducing the volume of water reaching downstream countries.
Ethiopia's Water and Energy Ministry announced plans for the Karadobi, Mandaya, and Beko Abo hydropower projects in March.
Abdiwahab Sheikh said Cairo's strongest tools are diplomacy, alliances, international law, and coordination with Sudan, while economic pressure is weaker and military coercion carries significant risks.
“A practical arrangement is possible if Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan accept transparent information exchange, advance notification, adaptive dam-management rules and mechanisms for addressing droughts and downstream impacts.”
