Artemis II moonshot commander and pilot retire from NASA
Wiseman and his crew asked for permission to name one of the moon's craters after his late wife Carroll, who died of cancer in 2020.
Wiseman is a retired Navy captain who spent more than five months aboard the International Space Station in 2014.
Wiseman's future plans were not disclosed.

Artemis II crew receives Space Medal of Honor; Trump establishes space academy
Reid Wiseman was the commander of the Artemis II mission.
Trump signed an executive order establishing the U.S. Space Academy, a national academy similar to the service academies for the armed forces.
President Donald Trump bestowed the Congressional Space Medal of Honor on the Artemis II crew on Friday at Johnson Space Center in Houston.

NASA is targeting Artemis III for low Earth orbit commercial lander tests in 2027 and Artemis IV for a lunar landing in 2028.
Artemis II was the first crewed flight of NASA's Orion spacecraft and the first mission to travel around the moon in over fifty years.
The Artemis II mission launched on April 1 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Trump announces Artemis II crew to receive Congressional Space Medal of Honor
President Joe Biden awarded the medal to Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken in 2023.
Astronauts killed in the Apollo 1 fire and the space shuttle Challenger and Columbia disasters were posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
A White House official confirmed the Congressional Space Medal of Honor will be presented on Friday, August 28, at Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Artemis II astronaut Jeremy Hansen announces retirement
Hansen shared during a live broadcast from the mission that the crew wished to name a crater on the lunar surface after Wiseman's late wife, Carroll.
Hansen's departure will leave the CSA with three active astronauts: David Saint-Jacques, Joshua Kutryk, and Jenni Gibbons.
Hansen flew around the moon during the Artemis II mission in April.

We’re not always on the joy train, this crew, there are many times we’re not on the joy train, but we are committed to getting back on the joy train as soon as we can. And that is a useful life skill for any team trying to get something done.”
