Morocco celebrates defeat of UN resolution on Western Sahara
Russia's alternative draft resolution to renew the existing mission without changes failed to secure the nine votes needed for adoption, receiving two votes in favour, one against, and 11 abstentions.
The Polisario Front's UN representative Sidi Omar welcomed Russia's veto because the US proposal would undermine Sahrawi self-determination.
The US resolution received support from 11 of the 15 UN Security Council members, including France and the United Kingdom.
