Reactions and Debate Follow Resignation and Death of Cambridge Professor

Arday announced his resignation from the University of Cambridge after the institution launched an investigation into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments following allegations of plagiarism.

Metropolitan Police stated to BBC News that Arday's death was unexpected but not believed to be suspicious.

Ibram X. Kendi wrote in an essay for The Emancipator that the "White-owned, mainstream media" had "lynched" Arday.

“I don't see how that would work at all, if I'm being honest. But also imagine what kind of tool that could be for bad actors who want to silence their critics, who want to silence people talking about bad conduct or even crimes. And so I think people just need to remember that there are ways that we can approach this. There are ways we can challenge coverage that we think is wrong, but giving the government power to censor speech, to censure the press. It won't fix this, but it will just create more problems.”

University suspends US academic leading Jason Arday plagiarism accusations

Jason Arday became Cambridge's youngest-ever Black professor when he was appointed in 2023.

Nathan Cofnas said he was suspended by Ghent University and expected to be fired.

Ghent University Rector Petra De Sutter and Vice-Rector Herwig Reynaert said academic freedom may be restricted in order to protect the rights of others.

“Arday’s harassment and death are not idiosyncrasies: they are very much a case of institutional murder by a system infused with anti-Black racism,”
