A state of emergency was declared for the City of Dover after a confirmed tornado touched down and caused significant damage.
A trained spotter reported a rain-wrapped tornado on the ground and flying debris around 6:18 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The Days Inn and the Superlodge hotels on North DuPont Highway both lost parts of their roofs during the storm.
“The craziest part was the sound of it. It was like a whistling sound, almost like a train sound. The rain was so bad and the wind was so bad, you couldn't really see it. All you could see was the trees bending down like crazy. Reagan Coder, also of Dover, said the sound immediately signaled danger.”

“We're right by Kennedy Airport. I thought it was a big loud jet flying over. You heard this big loud rumble- but all of a sudden you could feel the building move and shake you could hear the windows pounding in and out and all of a sudden you look out the window and furniture from cabanas from the deck area were flying everywhere, so we all ran to the middle room because we thought maybe it would break one of the glass doors or windows, and it would go flying,”
