Amtrak To Use Mobile Phone Ticketing
We reported around two weeks ago that Massachusetts train conductors would be using ticketing applications on mobile phones starting this fall (click here). Well it seems the rest of the nation weren’t far behind as Amtrak will be offering the same thing this summer. Train conductors will be using iPhone’s to scan the tickets of passengers. Passengers can use an application on their iPhone’s to present the barcode, the only problem is at this point the application is only available for iPhone. We are told however, that in the fall we will see an Android version, but for now Android users must load their tickets through a website, or use a normal ticket. The system costing $7.5 Million to develop, will help save trees and eliminate the need for placing new ticketing kiosks at stations. By the summer 1,700 train conductors will be using this technology. This has been available in other nations for quite some time now so it’s nice to see the US catching up.
